Baby Food by Mom

When I took J to his 6 month check up, which was before the 6 month mark, the dr. asked me if I was going to make his food.  I looked at her like she was crazy and said, "I don't think I'm dedicated enough for that."   The truth is, I’m not the cook in the family and really hadn’t given baby food much thought.

On his 6 month birthday I choose to give him smashed avocados instead of jarred food, then bananas.  A couple of moms in my mom’s group had talked about making homemade food and how easy it was.   Fast-forward a couple of weeks and here I am writing a blog about homemade baby food!

Here are a few foods that are safe for a 6 month old…
*Sweet potato puree
*pear puree
*apple puree
*winter squash puree
*zucchini puree
*baby’s rice cereal

So far I have made sweet potato puree and winter squash puree.  It was sooo easy, even for a non-cook like me!  Here are the top 3 reasons I like homemade food:
1.  It’s cheap!  It takes a little time to make, but I can make organic food a lot cheaper than I can buy it.
 2. I know exactly what’s in it.  I control whether I put breast milk or formula in it, organic vs. non-organic produce.
3.  The nutrient content is higher.  Just like fresh produce vs. canned, during the industrial cooking process nutrients are lost.

Winter Squash Puree
Preheat oven 350degrees
Cut squash lengthways in half (you have to push pretty hard).
Scrape out seeds and fibers-toss in trash
Roast in ¼ inch water for 1hr.
Scoop and puree the insides in food processor or blender.
Add breast milk or formula to thin.
Pour in ice cube trays to freeze.
Can freeze up to 3 months.

Sweet Potato Puree
Preheat over 425 degrees.
Prick sweet potatoes with fork or knife and place on baking sheet.
Roast 45-60 mins or until potato is soft.
Scoop out insides.
Puree in blender or food processor until smooth.
Add breast milk or formula to thin.  (It took quite a bit for mine to thin)
Pour in ice cube trays to freeze.
Can freeze up to 3 months.

Enjoy your foods!
